The San Juan Outdoor School believes wholeheartedly in the power of women exploring the backcountry together to learn outdoor skills and achieve common goals. As Telluride's only mountain outfitter with a female owner and an extensive female staff, we understand how important it is to create a supportive learning environment for women. Our All Women's Courses are designed and taught by some of the most qualified and knowledgeable females in the industry. If you have never been out with a group of gals before, you will be surprised how empowering and enjoyable it is!

All Women's Weekend Rock Climbing Clinic
Dates: June 10 & 11 and August 26 & 27, 2006

In this two-day clinic, you will have the opportunity to explore the vertical realm of rock climbing in Ophir's Cracked Canyon just outside Telluride, Colorado . This beautiful and austere rock canyon is the perfect setting to learn rock climbing and mountaineering skills. Our expert instructors provide a nurturing learning experience for students of all abilities. No experience necessary.

ITINERARY:
Day One - Introduction to belaying, climbing
Day Two - More advanced climbing/mountaineering skills: fixed lines, rapelling, lead climbing, climbing anchors, etc...

Women's Autumn Adventure in the San Juan Mountains
Date: September 8-11, 2006
Cost: $595 (regular price: $750 per person)

The San Juan Mountains are considered by many to be the most beautiful in the state of Colorado. This 4-day backpacking and rock climbing course is the perfect opportunity to learn backcountry skills while exploring the region's rich natural history. You will experience all aspects of the wilderness experience learning navigation, backcountry cooking, belaying, climbing and backpacking techniques from seasoned backcountry leaders. No experience necessary.

ITINERARY:
Day One - Introduction and packing, hike into Ice Lakes Basin
Day Two - Peak Ascents of Fuller and Vermillion (non-technical high thirteeners)
Day Three - Morning day hike to Island Lake , hike out to car, dinner out in Telluride or Silverton
Day Four - Rock climb at Cracked Canyon in Ophir

Babes in the Backcountry
Avalanche Awareness Clinic

Date: February 2007

This one-day course is intended for women of all disciplines (Alpine, Snowboard, Telemark) who want to educate themselves about avalanche protocol and hazard evaluation. This workshop provides an excellent simplified introduction to the avalanche phenomenon in a supportive and nurturing all-female environment. Topics include avalanche awareness, beacon and rescue techniques, terrain analysis and snow stability evaluation. The morning is spent in a classroom environment and the rest of the day on a tour in the Lizard Head Pass backcountry. This clinic is sponsored by San Juan Field School , San Juan Outdoor School and Babes in the Backcountry. No prior experience in necessary.

Sponsored by the San Juan Field School, the San Juan Outdoor School and Babes in the Backcountry, this program provides women with an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the avalanche phenomenon in a supportive learning environment with some of the best female avalanche educators in the state. This comprehensive course covers the same material as a standard Level I course but does so in a backcountry setting making field sessions more readily accessible. Lodging and food is provided at the lovely Alta Lakes Observatory! Demo backcountry equipment and clothing will be available.
