Are you the kind of person that wants to be dropped off in the middle of no-where to find your self back to civilization? Come and join the San Juan Outdoor School for a two day seminar on how to build a fire with out modern fire starting equipment (lighters, or matches) learn to survive with out a tent, stove, or with out food in the vast San Juan Mountains surrounding Telluride.
A well-constructed fire can dry your clothes; increase your core temperature, cook your food, purify your water, and light your way. This course will cover skills including fire safety, proper fire materials, fire construction, and many methods of starting and maintaining fires, as well as shelter building with modern and primitive techniques.
This course will focus on the Bow Drill and Hand Drill methods of friction fire making and how to easily start a fire. Fire safety, tinder, fire wood selection, and setting up a primitive fireplace will be covered in addition to some of the history and physics of friction fire making. Proper construction and use of the fire making equipment will be emphasized during the course. Students will construct fire-making sets, which will be theirs to keep from a variety of materials provided by us. Day one will focus on Friction Fire Making course teaches both the Hand Drill friction fire making method and the Bow Drill fire making method because they are the easiest fire kits to make. Day Two will look at putting the fire to use cooking, drying cloths, purifying water, shelter building, and basic survival navigation.
